Create comfortable, budget-conscious Halloween costumes using cardboard, fabric scraps and items you already own.
Shop your own wardrobe first
Gather plain shirts, old scarves, clean fabric offcuts and spare cardboard before buying anything new. Simple themes include robot, star, friendly ghost, nature explorer, rainbow, cat, storybook character and wizard. Comfort matters more than a complicated prop.
A cardboard robot in three steps
An adult prepares a light box with generous head and arm openings and smooth edges. Children decorate it with large paper shapes. Keep the face open, avoid restrictive shoulder pressure and consider reflective elements if the costume will be worn outdoors after dusk.

Design for reuse
Detachable accessories, washable fabrics and reversible pieces allow costume parts to become ordinary dress-up materials later. Avoid poorly ventilated masks, sharp attachments and uncomfortable adhesives on skin. Store the components after the event so next year starts with a box of useful materials, not a shopping list.
Practical checklist
- Inventory what you already own.
- Let adults handle cutting tools.
- Keep vision, breathing and movement unrestricted.
