Keep pets safe around candy, costumes, decorations and visitors with a practical Halloween checklist.
Keep sweets and decorations out of reach
Chocolate and sugar-free sweets containing xylitol may seriously harm pets. Store candy in a closed container and teach children not to leave treat bags on the floor. Open flames, electrical cords and small decorations add avoidable hazards. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect ingestion.
Create a quiet retreat
Repeated doorbells, unfamiliar people and masks can frighten some animals. Set up a calm room with water, bedding and familiar toys. Let the pet withdraw rather than forcing interaction or photos. Check gates, doors and identification details in case an animal tries to escape.

A costume is optional
Costumes should not restrict breathing, vision, movement or normal behaviour. Remove an outfit if your pet appears distressed or uncomfortable. A simple bandana—or no costume at all—is often a better choice. Veterinary needs and individual temperament matter more than a photograph.
