How to Read an NBA Box Score: FG, AST, REB and Plus-Minus

Decode the main NBA box-score statistics and learn why context matters more than a single headline number.

Decode the common columns

MIN means minutes, PTS points, REB rebounds, AST assists, STL steals, BLK blocks and TOV turnovers. FGM/FGA tracks made and attempted field goals, while FG% is the ratio. The 3PM/3PA columns describe three-point makes and attempts. Always look at playing time before comparing two totals.

Plus-minus needs context

Plus-minus describes the team’s score differential while a player is on court. It is not a standalone grade of individual talent, because teammates, opponents, minutes and game situation influence it. Shooting 4-for-5 looks efficient, but it is a small sample. Pair efficiency with volume and role.

Do not reduce a game to one row

Pace, second-chance scoring and points in the paint may add context beyond a traditional box score. A player with few attempts might have made a substantial defensive contribution. Official NBA glossaries define basic columns; advanced metrics on third-party sites may rely on different assumptions.

Practical checklist

  • Read points, minutes and shot volume together.
  • Do not treat plus-minus as a solo performance score.
  • Use official stat definitions as a reference.
