A practical privacy checklist for PDF converters, including browser processing, uploads and retention policies.
Local processing versus cloud uploads
A PDF converter may transform a file entirely in the browser or send it to a remote service. Both can produce the same download button while creating different privacy implications. A generic “secure” label is not a substitute for clear information about processing location, storage and retention.
Sensitive documents need a higher bar
Identity records, medical documents, financial files and contracts deserve more caution than a casual image conversion. Prefer a tool approved by your organisation where required. Remove unnecessary pages and remember that document metadata may hold names, dates and other contextual information.

Ask four questions before uploading
Where is the file processed? How long is it stored? Who can access it? Can the user delete it? Browser-based tools may still load third-party code, so no slogan provides absolute security. Treat transparency and a clear data policy as practical selection criteria.
Practical checklist
- Avoid uploading sensitive documents to unknown sites.
- Review upload and retention policies.
- Remove unnecessary pages before processing.
